safe work australia has released an updated infographic showing key data on the rate, type and causes of mental health issues in the workplace, to help focus on how to reduce these statistics.

$37,000 for rural businesses hiring an apprentice

If you own a business in a rural or regional area, you may be eligible for up to $37,000 in wage subsidies for employing an apprentice.  The recently announced $60m Australian Apprentice Wage Subsidy (AAWS) targets regional and rural small businesses that may be eligible for a wage subsidy of up to $37,000 for employing an apprentice.  More information is available here or call Chris Turner, local Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider at AMA, 9 Craigie Street, Bunbury 1800 808 568.

Mental Fitness Summit - an explosion of talented mental fitness professionals

Mental fitness is associated with positive mind states such as resilience, cheerfulness and adaptability. It is the culture, the mindset, the tool for ensuring you have the most effective and efficient workforce possible. Away from work mental fitness includes diet, sleep and a host of other elements which allow an individual to always be at their Everybest

Everybest is a term that we have phrased to indicate personal effectiveness. With the ever increasing anxiety, stress, depression, fatigue and burnout incidents happening at work, companies must further develop their culture to avoid these types of workers comp and performance issues.

The Mental Fitness Summit was a one day explosion of talented mental fitness professionals presenting hints, tips and ideas on how to build individual and workplace mental fitness.

New penalties for OSH breaches

OSH PenaltiesPenalties for breaches of Western Australia’s workplace health and safety laws increased on 3 October 2018. The new penalties are consistent with the national model Work Health and Safety Act (Model Act), with a further 14 per cent increase for inflation since 2010.

Examples for a first offence by a body corporate include:

• Level 1 penalties increase from $50,000 to $450,000.
• Level 4 penalties increase from $500,000 to $2.7 million.

Terms of imprisonment for individual offenders have increased from two to five years for level 4 offences.

The new penalties operate in workplaces covered by the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984.  Download the amendment here.
